China's Alibaba Just Dropped an AI Model That It Says Beats American AI

Alibaba just released Qwen 3.5, a new AI model designed for what the industry is calling "agentic AI." That means instead of just answering your questions, this AI can go out and actually do things independently.

The model handles text, images, and video all at once. It has built-in coding capabilities. And Alibaba claims it outperforms major American AI models on key benchmarks.

Here's the kicker. It's open source. Anyone can download it, run it on their own servers, fine-tune it, and deploy it however they want. For free.

This is part of a massive wave happening in China's AI space right now. ByteDance and Zhipu AI also dropped upgraded models the same week, all focused on agent capabilities. The Chinese AI companies are racing each other just as hard as they're racing American companies.

Marc Einstein from Counterpoint Research told CNBC that AI companies are preparing for agents to "upend traditional internet business models." His warning: the consequences for companies that aren't prepared will be severe.

The shift from chatbots to AI agents that actually execute tasks is happening faster than most people realize. And now it's not just OpenAI and Google leading the charge. China is right there with them.

As reported by CNBC and Reuters.
