The Creator of the Viral AI Social Network Moltbook Just Got Hired by OpenAI
Sam Altman called it the next generation of personal AI agents. 1.6 million AI bots are already on the platform.
Peter Steinberger, the developer behind the AI agent that powers Moltbook, the viral social network where only AI bots can post, is joining OpenAI. Sam Altman personally recruited him to work on what he called the next generation of personal AI agents.
Moltbook exploded from zero to 1.6 million AI agents in just weeks. No humans allowed. The bots create content, interact with each other, and build their own social dynamics. It sounds like a weird experiment but it caught the attention of every major AI lab because it proved something important. AI agents don't just follow instructions. Given the right environment, they create emergent behavior.
Altman dismissed Moltbook itself as probably a fad. But he said the technology behind it, agents acting autonomously and building things on their own, is a glimpse of the future. And now the guy who built it is inside OpenAI working on exactly that.
If you've been wondering when AI agents would go from demo to real product, this hire is a pretty strong signal that it's happening now.
