Perplexity AI Just Killed Its Own Ads Because It Thinks You'll Actually Pay for Trust
The AI search engine is betting everything on subscriptions after ditching advertisements entirely.
In a move that basically no tech company ever makes, Perplexity AI just scrapped its entire advertising strategy. Gone. Done. The AI-powered search engine is going all-in on subscriptions instead, betting that people will pay real money for answers they can actually trust.
Think about how radical this is. Google makes almost all of its money from ads. Bing tried ads. Every search engine in history has leaned on advertising. But Perplexity is saying: that model is broken for AI. When you're asking an AI for answers, you need to know those answers aren't being influenced by whoever paid the most.
The company's logic is simple but bold. If their AI gives you search results shaped by advertisers, you'll stop trusting it. And once trust is gone in AI, it's gone forever. So they're choosing the harder path: make the product so good that people happily pay for it.
Whether this works or becomes a cautionary tale is anyone's guess. But in a world drowning in AI hype and ad-stuffed search results, at least one company is trying something different.
